Smart TV setup

IPTV on a smart TV, without an extra box

If your TV has an app store, there is a good chance all you need is one app. Find your brand below, and check whether your model is new enough.

Find your TV

Samsung

Press Home, then open Apps

Samsung's newer sets use Tizen and have their own store. Search for the player app the desk recommends, then install it.

Watch out: app choice is narrower here than on Android, and older sets may no longer get updates.

LG

Press Home, then open the LG Content Store

LG's webOS sets work in much the same way. The Magic Remote's pointer makes typing your details less of a chore.

Watch out: available apps vary by webOS version and region.

Google TV and Android TV

Open Apps, then Google Play

Many Sony, Hisense and TCL sets run this system. You get the widest choice of players, and it is usually the simplest setup.

Watch out: budget sets can have slow processors and little storage. See our Android guide.

Roku TV, Vizio and others

Ask us first

App options on these systems can be limited. Tell us the model before you pay. A streaming stick in the HDMI port is often the most reliable route.

Device and platform names are trademarks of their owners and are used here only to say what the service runs on. Yeah IPTV is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

Setting it up on your TV

  1. Connect your TV

Plug in an Ethernet cable if you can. Otherwise, use your 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.

  2. Update the TV

Look under Settings, then Support or General, for a software update. It solves more problems than you would expect.

  3. Install the player app

Find it in your TV's store. The desk will tell you which one suits your model, and if it carries a fee.

  4. Add your details

Type carefully with the remote, because capital letters count. Some apps let you add your details from a phone or computer instead.

  5. Test it in the evening

Try the channels you care about at around 8pm, when your connection is at its busiest.

Keep the TV, add a stick

A streaming stick is often worth it, even if your TV technically has apps. It may be the better option if:

  • Your TV is more than about five years old and its apps feel slow
  • The app you need is not in your TV's store
  • Your TV's Wi-Fi is weak, and a stick with an Ethernet adapter would fix that
  • You would like the same menus on every TV in the house
